When I first got my driver's licence I would drive to Vancouver by myself just to go there to browse their massive selection and buy CDs. It had a long history there too, it was once the main Virgin Records location in the province, then when that shut down HMV swooped in and kept it going pretty much unchanged (except for the branding obviously). But now it's a Victoria's Secret. ugh.
The only HMVs that are still somewhat near me are smaller ones that weren't worth going out of my way for anyway since the music collection has dwindled so much and like 40% of the store is Hot Topic pop-culture knick-knacks now. I remember when my local store closed there were some decent liquidation sales, but the prices weren't great enough to really make it worthwhile.
On the other hand since HMV's collapse two local stores where I can buy records have popped up nearby (one for used stuff and one a major Canadian chain that for some reason decided to stock lots of new vinyl). And I'd rather get LPs than CDs anyway. If anything the biggest loss for me is losing HMV's movie library, they had a lot of blurays to browse through.
