They have their advantages. Being able to stock what sells locally is a big plus. Perhaps the biggest, though, is selling used records. Not that the big stores didn't also do it, but it seems that they often didn't know what to buy or how to buy: the selection often sucked and the prices were too high. Also, the smaller indie stores are going to have a much more knowledgeable staff. Not that anybody actually asks the staff for help in buying music any more, but the staff do contribute to the feel and culture of the store.
