Lola Montes was a visual treat, but the lead performance (I'm blanking on the actress, who I haven't seen in anything else) left something to be desired. Then again, perhaps the role called for a distant, cold portrayal. It was interesting, but I went into well aware that it wasn't one of the top Ophuls.
That's sorta part of the fun of Criterion; they really have some weird choices, and definitely some weaker ones, but I'll sit through anything. Who knows how long I'll carry on with this 'project,' but I'm having fun right now. Truffaut coming up next! Yeah, maybe I'll do a post like this more frequently.
