Haven't you called "There's A Riot Goin' On" you favorite album ever?

So it makes sense that you'd be a bit sensitive to him trashing it. It's one of my all time favorites too but even though Trung's opinions often don't make sense to me, it's important to remember that he basically has no ear for soul music whatsoever. He's basically admitted this himself and him saying "Riot" lacks energy and justifying that statement by saying it doesn't match the standards of rock n' roll energy basically reinforces this.
People who are just starting to listen to jazz after only being familiar with rock do the same thing. In some cases, the person has retrain the way they listen and develop a new set of rules by which to form criteria. Trung clearly hasn't been able to do this with soul music yet. Another good example is claiming to be all about melody but denying Stevie Wonder's melodic gifts. I can understand disliking Stevie for being cheesy and maybe a few other reasons but to be unable to admit that he's objectively an extremely gifted writer of melodies simply means you don't know how to listen to his music.
