Had to give it time to grow on me in general but finding out that Mangum is a huge Daniel Johnston fan helped a lot and gave me the proper frame of reference (it helped that I'm a Dan fan myself). I think "Aeroplane" is just ok and have basically given up on NMH because there's tons of stuff I'd rather listen to instead but while a lot of people are confused and even angered by it being called a life-changing album, I understand. You have to look past the album's musical and lyrical shortcomings and focus on the emotional aspect of what Mangum is doing (again, similar to DJ except Dan writes really good melodies and is far more direct lyrically). That's what's affecting people so significantly as much as (if not more) the actual material.
