Gorecki - Symphony no. 3 - I really really want to love this composition. The idea of this composer performing this completely tonal work in an avantgarde Royan festival and completely pissing off all the modernist who were attending there must have been one of the greatest moment of music history. I find it far more stunning story than stuff like The Rite of springs riots. One thing alienating general public it's another thing to overtly alienate your peers. The idea of Pierre Boulez loudly proclaiming "merde" or shit during the performance would have been a sight to see
Unfortunately this piece is completely dull as. Greenberg picked some highlights that sounded beautiful in his lecture series but actually listening to it start to finish is an exercise in tedium. Why is it the reaction against atonality has to be static harmonies with limited modulation trying to create an "atmosphere", instead of the good old days where the manipulation of keys was the highlight pf the composition.
I respect this composition as an assault against modernism rather than actually liking it
