A lot of the time lyrics. There are songs I would never play for friends (but might put on a mix CD) just because of that. As far as actual musical elements, synthesizers do it to me worst -- but sometimes a song is great because of the campy elements.
"2112" is one of the songs I'd be least likely to play for people but it hasn't got synthesizers, has it? and "Come Sail Away" has a Dennis DeYoung vocal and synth break and and lyrics about getting beamed up to a spaceship and being taken into heaven and it's great. Go figure.
Sorry for the vague generalities but I can't think of the fits-it-to-a-T example.
Bobby Gillespie, both circa-1990 and now, looks like an ugly woman.
