Well I guess those three "no synth" albums had concepts. but the concepts were pretty tenuous, and the musical character of the albums ended up being kinda samey (especially on Distortion and Realism). and then one where they brought back synths was total overkill. The new one is much more varied in the instrumentation which is nice. Though of course it still sounds like The Magnetic Fields, it's not like Stephin Merritt decided that his songs needed tons of electric guitars and drumkits all of a sudden or anything, haha.

That's by far my biggest complaint about this new record. Merritt chose to sing every song by himself. It does make sense cus they're autobiographical songs i guess. but even on the mediocre Magnetic Fields albums that preceded this one there are a handful of tracks given to Claudia Gonson and Shirley Simms to sing. So it would have been nice to have more varied lead vocals here. They do appear in the backing vocals though, so it's not like they are totally absent.
