I rarely outright hate movies, to be honest (it's just not worth it). But the whole thing felt really superfluous to me. Part of why the book works at all is that as a book, it can dispense the setting slowly and through the voice of a child, so you only gradually come to understand the situation he and the mom are in. In the movie it's all out in the open from the first moment. Plus it just all feels so ordinary, except Larson (who's always great).
