The movie itself is basically a straightforward revenge narrative that make Tarantino's last 5 or so movies look even sillier and more childish than they already are. I laughed for like 5 minutes at the part where the guy attempts DIY surgery on his own leg, fails completely, then smash cuts into an urgent care center saying "I had an accident...." pitifully. There's even a casually tossed-off N-word in there! I have no idea if Jeremy Saulnier is purposely structuring his movies to read as rebukes to Tarantino's insufferably gimmicky overstylized cartoons, but you could easily see how a premise like this or Green Room's could easily be turned into a joke if they were directed by a certain masturbatory hack who forgot how to write good dialogue 20 years ago. I guess Blue Ruin got compared to the Coens and Green Room was unanimously declared to be "Carpenter-esque", though.
I keep forgetting you never read Fargo Rock City but I KNOW damn well we've had the Axl/Kurt discussion before. I'll not rehash, you can pretty much fill in the conversation yourself if you'd like. For me, the most hilarious part about it was Axl being totally supportive of Nirvana and being a total Stan for the whole alternative rock movement, only to be epically rebuffed and turn into a bitter enemy instead.
