The Great Escape was their third straight la-la-la Britpop album, albeit with a slightly larger dose of "kooky silly!" vibe in songs like "Mr. Robinson's Quango." The lead single "Country House" screams "KINKS!!!!" about as loudly as humanly possible.
It's a perfectly good album, I think it was just getting blown out of the water saleswise by Oasis and their goddamn "Champagne Supernova"...well, I assure you, if it's bombastic orchestration you want, "The Universal" off of TGE destroys that. So does "Best Days," a dreamy submarine sounding sort of ballad and "Yuko & Hiro" which is soft vocals over a bunch of toy synthesizers.
