They've really ALWAYS been a divisive band--the people annoyed by them today would probably have been the people annoyed by them in 1981; I think it was around that time that the Mekons wrote a song with some lyric like "we don't need the Dublin messiah sprinkling crumbs" which was the first time another band took a shot at U2 (the Replacements' "Kids Don't Follow" is also supposed to be a shot at "I Will Follow.") ANY U2 album probably has a truckload of people who hate it; hell, on this board alone I'm pretty sure half the people here don't even care for The Joshua Tree, an album I've adored since 2000.
