Yeah that review is pretty accurate. The best thing about the film is the visuals, and most of those were in the various older iterations of the franchise already (and looked better there anyway) so it's not like those alone are a reason to watch the movie. It's completely forgettable otherwise.
"caring about nothing for two hours" is a good way to describe it. It's kind of amazing how they turned a series packed so full of interesting ideas and themes into something so incredibly forgettable.
The new New Pornographers album is basically their worst album by default since it doesn't have Dan Bejar on it. Without him that means the album is automatically down two or three big highlights. Newman's songs are still decent, but he's not at the top of his game anymore and cant come up with a full album of great tracks like he used to. This wasn't as much of a problem on Together or Brill Bruisers since Bejar was there to pick up the slack, but on this record things are pretty meh.
I was in the background of a CBC studio session of them promoting their new album a few weeks ago. It should be out pretty soon. Hurry up guys, I wanna see myself in the shadows standing awkwardly behind the bassist dammit!
