While I haven't listen to the single version I always felt that Bowie's Heroes was padded out and overlong. It doesn't exactly have 6 minutes of material in the song so chances are I probably like the single edit more than the album version
Yes pacing is an intrinsic part of composing/songwriter. Creating compact, efficient and concise piece of music is vital from my point of view
As Brahms said "It is not hard to compose, but what is fabulously hard is to leave the superfluous notes under the table"
