Believe me, I hear you two ("could care less" really gets me), but I knew a guy who went into conniptions when he heard the word "awesome" because people never used it the "correct" way. Really that's joined a thicket of interchangeable Super Mario World secret-world ways to express approval while losing a perfectly useful sense. You could say "awful" or "dreadful" but those, too, have very altered meanings. It sucks all around, yes, but we break practically all of Fowler's Modern English Usage all the time. I'm not sure where I'm going with this post.
"Begging the question" is probably too far gone at this point but the original meaning could be restored with something like "positing the question". It does grate for sure.
