I had no plans of really bothering with solo Phil *albums* at all, although I'll cop to liking three or four of the hits. I know I tried to listen to Face Value once, and ended up with the same opinion as George--only ITAT and "Tomorrow Never Knows" were interesting at all. Sort of like how much I ended up hating Asia even though I actually shamelessly love the big opening hit.
Then again, you're describing it as a "full album of We Can't Dance ballads," and...well I actually kind of liked those, I was surprised at how well WCD works at least as background music. As for Phil playing all the instruments....well, I doubt Tony and Mike had a lot of trouble playing their parts on WCD, but I've been proven wrong about how much they contributed to those pop-era Genesis albums before, so.
No, I hate synth horns with a passion, "soulful" or not. One of the crappier sounds to have ever gained prominence. See you in hell, 1988.
