I did not think that the 12-years-of-filming thing was necessarily a gimmick per se (and its filmmaking problems were mostly logistics--there were only 39 days of shooting, with the hilarious condition that Ethan Hawke would have ended up directing it if anything had happened to Linklater), but I did feel that the events that happen in the film's 164 minute running time were....mostly very, very plain coming-of-age signposts (or plain Linklater signposts, whichever.) That renders the film okay-at-best to me and seems to make it pretty clear why the huge critical buzz dropped off so quickly. I'm not in love with Birdman but I'm really really glad Boyhood didn't win Best Picture.
Something I need to mention about Linklater: remember that disgustingly beautiful ethereal girl with a French supermodel's face talking to the main character in the final scene of Boyhood? There is not a single remotely un-beautiful girl in Everybody Wants Some!!. They ALL look like 21 year old California supermodels dressed up in cutoff denim shorts. ALL of them. I began to wonder if it was some kind of joke for Linklater to do this in a film that was a sort of "sequel" to D&C, which had hot chicks in it too but had a few plain looking girls in it as well to balance stuff!!!
