Oh and speaking of "what passes for hip hop these days", thoughts on the new Kendrick?

Only listened once but I was disappointed in the more mainstream sound. He's obviously still working at a high level but despite some interesting subtly trippy sonic details, I find the beats dull and the whole synthesized autotuned style of modern hip hop (which this album embraces, albeit on its own terms) ugly and unpleasant. I'll give it another listen but seeing as I had a similar opinion of the similarly lauded "Good Kid", I'm starting to suspect that I'll be one of those Kendrick fans who loves "Butterfly" and "Unmastered" but doesn't listen to anything else of his, because those 2 releases will wind up being anomalies in his discography.
