After such a huge release like TPAB

he's in that post-ambitious-double-album period that a lot of acts have been before. so he basically had two choices: either try to top your magnum opus or majorly scale back and do a more back-to-basics project. Kendrick clearly chose the 2nd option, and as a result it's his weakest album to date (though I havent heard his early mixtapes).
He's still at the top of his game so saying it's a weaker album is relative, it's still good and has grown on me quite a bit after multiple listens. I'm not a fan of the more mainstream sound either but I'll take Kendrick making that kind of music over just about anyone else any day of the week.
It definitely feels more like a lesser work from a great artist rather than a great artist losing his touch.
I prefer TPAB to GKMC too, but GKMC has a lot more memorable hooks and interesting beats than DAMN does which places it ahead for me.
