the 2014 Alex Cox film, though.. oh boy. I've no idea what he was thinking with that. It's fine that he made it on a shoestring budget, but my main problem with it is that he shot it as part of some kind of crowd funded film student co production using very amateur actors. Thus marine/military characters that should be played by hard bitten Bruce Willis esque tough guys are played by weedy stick like bearded hipsters whose acting abilities are undeveloped to be kind. Then Cox makes things even worse by trying to hide these deficiencies by putting most of the cast in space helmets that restrict their audibility throughout and shooting the whole thing in black and white. Add in some terrible 50s B Movie level special effects that I think are supposed to be ironically bad but just come across as bad and you have, without a doubt THE WORST FILM ADAPTATION OF A GOOD BOOK I HAVE EVER SEEN. Please don't watch this until you've read and enjoyed the book, and preferably never watch it.
