I thought The Lincoln Lawyer was usually thought of as the start of this whole Matthew McConaughey renaissance thing. To be fair, what I've seen of it really did merit acclaim, but I also think it's kind of something that makes for a nice story--hey, this guy who played stoner Texas jerkoffs in rom-coms for years suddenly realized he should make good stuff instead! But yes, his last three films seem to have fallen under the radar, you left out Gold where he has some receding hairline crap going on.
"probably the single most unthreatening "Big Boss" bad guy character I've ever seen in a movie" - I guess you're not counting Lukas Haas in Brick then? I still crack up thinking about that casting.
Grand Illusion - Needs a rewatch, but nobody could ever forget Erich von Stroheim. The first ever Criterion wasn't it?
