One thing that would help Virtual Reality would be

the ability to play it in multiplayer. Otherwise it doesn't have any capacity for communal game experience. A single player game on a consul can still be a communal experience if you want to get together and work on the new Zelda or something, but with VR that doesn't really work.
Laserdiscs were bigger in Japan than the U.S. I don't know how Australia compared. I don't think I was aware of them until DVD came out and for a few years used media players had large laserdisc collections. Maybe I saw them in video stores but I don't remember. I know that some of them had commentaries but I'm not sure how common that was.
