No, the fat dude in Maltese Falcon isn't very intimidating. Certainly Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr. weren't!! (but that was part of the point, I guess) I never liked the movie as much as the book, the book's more effectively cynical (like reminding you that Spade never liked Archer.) I remember the description of the Sydney Greenstreet fatass in the book was like "the great soft white egg of the man's belly" or something like that.
Killer Joe is okay. I liked the supporting performances more than McConaughey though. He played that character the same way he'd go on to play the True Detective role, only evil. If you thought Thomas Haden Church had played dumbasses before wait until you see KJ.
I hate to keep beating a dead horse but McConaughey, in spite of having by far the more parodied of the two lead roles, acted circles around Harrelson in True Detective. That was after the Oscar win. So was Interstellar, which I hated, but most people liked, or seemed to.
