I remember liking it but I don't think I gave it more than a couple initial spins after it came out and never bought the CD. But yeah song choice makes a big difference. Picking songs that could actually benefit from the changes is a smart move. She knew changing songs from Hounds of Love would be sacrilege to her fans but people wouldn't mind if The Sensual World and The Red Shoes get messed with.
I did hear that ELO one. It was a completely superfluous and pointless waste of time. All the songs were recorded as close to the originals as possible except with every musician (including Lynne) sounding completely bored the whole time. It was also titled "Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra" which will only trick people into thinking they're buying a real compilation.
