Regarding that "gentle alternative rock": the theme song "Closer To Free" has been stuck in my head for years, but only because it's a hellaciously obvious ripoff of a certain R. E. M. hit that happens to be my all-time favorite song (go ahead, sing the vocal melody of one over the guitar parts of the other, it syncs up almost perfectly.) But yes, "dorky affability," I'm with you there.
The final episode was revealed to be something Roseanne made up because she'd written a book about her life, or something. She revealed that the heart attack Dan had at their kid's wedding (think that's at the end of the second to last season) had actually killed him, that she'd switched the two daughters' boyfriends and that Aunt Jackie was actually a lesbian and not her mom. This stuff really pissed off a lot of fans.
The last season of the show in general was full of bizarre weird stuff and most fans seem to hate it completely (yes, I have looked up a few boards about the show.) The episode I remember best involved, of all the people one would cast to play this, Jim "Ernest P. Worrell" Varney turning up as an Eastern European prince who appeared in the show's crappy little Illinois town to woo Aunt Jackie.
Most likely this new Roseanne stuff will go on the pile next to the Boy Meets World and Full House revivals, which I only watched a couple clips of (the former, definitely not the latter) and which to my knowledge were coasting on "woooooooo!" guest appearances and nostalgia and are both almost already dead. I think. This is all from AV Club-type osmosis.
