I remember something A Smith quoted on here once, I think it was from that big history of the Simpsons book. There was a section on that episode where Bart gets a car and goes on a road trip with Nelson, Milhouse and Martin.
The writer was talking about how he felt that episode managed by accident to capture this sense of freedom and optimism of post-cold war, pre-9/11 America where the economy was good, they were the only superpower in the world and had seemingly no major existential threats.
In retrospect I think quite a bit of US pop culture from the 90's has a bit of that feel, like a sort of amiable, no-big-problems vibe. I wonder if that'll ever happen again?
