I relistened to Face Value for the previous What's Spinning thread and quite liked most of it. It's very quaint but it's a generally pleasant listen and it's not boring. I'd say it falls squarely in the "Good" category. I like it more than a few of my less favored Genesis albums (ATTW3 for example).
I've got Hello I Must Be Going and Dance Into The Light coming up on the docket. It might just be a fool's errand but I'm going to give them a shot. he's gotta have some other decent songs on his albums. I like the Tarzan songs! There's gotta be more songs like those on somewhere in his discography. I listened to every Tony Banks album and there were loads of hidden gems on those! Why can't our boy Phil pull it off? Tune in next time on Ken's What's Spinning posts.
Yep, your Mike + The Mechanics description is 100% accurate. It's nothing particularly special, but it's a lot better than I was expecting. I am generally a liker of Invisible Touch so I don't mind that this sounds like a less Banksynth-infused sequel. It also helps that I listened to it after slogging through that Phil Collins dump. Doubt I'll return to it much, but I'm glad I gave it a shot and I might move on to other M+TM albums at some point.
Kevin Gilbert had a few pretty random production jobs before he died. This Emerson record was one of them. I didn't hate myself while listening to it so I'm going to assume that it's better than the 90s ELP albums. the songs with vocals are awful stuck in the 80s dinosaur rock but thankfully most of the album is instrumental. the 2nd half had some mild lite prog on it with mostly decent keyboard sounds (mostly piano, and organ with some moog but no "modern" synths), so it's not a total waste of time. Though I wouldn't go so far as to call it good. The album cover is some hideous Microsoft Word Art crap though so no wonder this record sank without a trace.
Gilbert also made an album with The Rubinoos (the "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" band) titled "Paleophonic" which is some wonderful 90s power pop. That one is worth checking out for sure.
