I personally think lyrics should never be necessary to understand the point of a song or composition - the music should speak for itself. The words can add a layer of meaning, or they can add nuance and suggestion. I don't think "Tears in Heaven" would be a better song if Eric Clapton sang, "My son just died, and now I'm really sad".
I also think good lyrics usually don't read well on paper, since they're meant to be sung.
