Yeah, I think things have improved since the '80s/'90s

The 80s and 90s included several conflated trends that resulted in bad music from these artists - synths that they didn't really know how to use, production trends that didn't suit them, increasing song lengths due to CDs, demand for more impressive vocals (read: high and loud) that they couldn't do due to aging and, in many cases, a lot of smoking in their youths.
It seems like a lot of these artists got better in the 00s/10s, but people like me are used to the trend established earlier, so it always feels surprising when they do something good.
