Yeah, listening to Can's albums in order is pretty much the way to go

Though there are several Suzuki-era live and rarities comps and bootleg that I'd recommend before "Babaluma" or anything that came after it (listed in my response to Joe H. above). "Babaluma" is basically the guys trying to continue in a somewhat similar vein to "Future Days" and "Landed" is sort of their version of an alien pop album (reminds me of Eno's early song-based albums). After that, they settle into a weird hybrid of what they'd done earlier with world music and disco influences. That description probably makes the albums sound terrible and they kinda have that reputation but I think they're pretty good when judged on their own terms. Yeah, they definitely don't hold up against the early albums but the musicianship is still damn impressive and they never lost the ability to stumble upon uniquely alluring grooves. Kinda like comparing The Mothers of Invention with 70's and 80's Zappa.
