I've never had mice in my apartment, but in both of the houses I lived in when I lived with my family we'd get mice at least every couple of years, and then we'd set traps, catch a bunch of mice, and then they would be gone. I don't remember if there's a particular number of mice you should expect to have to kill before they go away. More than three and fewer than 9? We only ever used the conventional snap traps. If they're not working and you aren't interested in adopting a cat (or a snake?) I don't know what to tell you.
p.s. People who use glue traps have told me that depending on how strong the glue is, expect to find either a trap with mouse footprints in it but no mouse, or a mouse that got stuck and struggled so hard that it ripped its legs off.
