Thanks. I ordered a package of the Easy Set traps, which are pre-baited (and you can add your own bait on top of it). The Easy Sets reportedly are actually really hard to set -- it's easy to trip the mechanism -- but if I catch more than the one-a-week I'm yielding now it will be a success. (The trouble with setting them stems often from their having a sensitivity setting, where with the "sensitive" practically any brush will fire it. But given that my problem with the regular traps -- which I'm at wits' end with -- is that they eat the bait off the lever then scamper off, this should be a very good thing provided I be able to set them).
I do plan on getting a cat in the next few years to keep me company between when my dog dies and when I'm over it enough to get a new one. My dog's only seven and is small with hybrid vigor so that's a ways in the future, I hope. As the primer says:
The cat playeth
Before he slayeth.
