Might sound like heresy but I've never really understood all the hype about Jay Dee. Maybe I'm the wrong guy- I've never really cared about beats too much (I'm definitely all about the flows when it comes to hip hop- some of my favorite MCs use cheap, shitty sounding beats). But "Donuts" doesn't really do all that much for me and neither does "Beats, Rhymes & Life" (and again, I'm a big Tribe fan). But there was that album by The Roots that had a bunch of beats of his which included a tribute at the end (which one was that? The Roots have so many dope albums)- I liked that one. Anyway, he's a solid hip hop producer and everything but I've never found his beats to anything special. What am I missing? Any key productions I'm unfamiliar with besides that 2nd Pharcyde?
Yeah I go through phases where I hardly listen to any hip hop too (just get tired of it sometimes and I'm always perplexed by people I know who literally listen to nothing else) but I think within the last year or so I realized that I no longer owned "The Chronic" and had the desire to listen to it (might have been when the NWA movie was announced) and also realized that there were a bunch of 90's hip hop classics that I've never bothered to hear so I'm working through them. Have been some nice surprises (again, I was unaware of the extent of Ice Cube's talent back on those first few albums of his).
