I have to disagree about Mega Man X2: the original was better. There was a PC port of it (that I can never find anything about; the only PC Mega Man games I can find were the shitty CGA ones) that I played the snot out of before I got a Super Nintendo. It was about as fun as a Mega Man game got. I had Mega Man X4 for PlayStation but don't remember anything about it, and Mega Man 8 I remember only because I just mentioned a PSX Mega Man game.
When I had ZSNES my graphics adapter wasn't good enough to integrate the different layers so in Chrono Trigger, for instance, you had to choose between the fog/clouds in the future and the regular plane of gameplay whereas you can see both layers at once in the game on a real SNES. I guess that didn't make much sense.
FF5 was the first and I believe the only complete large-scale fan translation. Yeah, I had it, too. Hmm, I was still into video games when the 5/6 package (with the official translation) came out on PSX. I wonder why I didn't buy it? maybe because I already had FF3 and a perfectly good translated ROM on my computer? Many other fan translations were announced but never seemed to get going.
If you still have access to that Win98 computer, why can't you find the old Babble posts? If it doesn't have internet just burn the files to a CD.
