In Dragon Warrior III, at least, there were battles in the casino that you could bet on, and the fights played out in a set way so that you could save your state, see who won the fight, and then load your state and put tons of cash down on the winner. You can make all the money you need in the game this way.
Other games probably had this dynamic. It would be really helpful in the "money-making game" in the original Zelda, for instance.
