Let's go off of Devo then. Devo were intentionally confrontational (especially their early live shows). They referenced a lot of different styles of music and put them together in ways that were intentionally awkward and alienating to the people familiar with the things being referenced, often going so far as to incorporate riffs or lyrics from other songs, similar to the Dada movement's use of collages and the Residents. Uncontrollable Urge opens with the riff to I Want to Hold Your Hand, before going into the riff from Zeppelin's Misty Mountain Hop. Whip It was based on the riff to Oh Pretty Woman, with the beat changed slightly. These songs are both avant-garde and catchy at the same time.
