I wouldn't call Ultima Online a massive failure

It was a bit ahead of its time because the internet infrastructure then wasn't powerful enough to really support a MMORPG (is that the right term?). It was probably the most successful of the early ones (excluding the ones on AOL where you went to chat rooms called "The Tavern" and the like and picked up horny girls/guys posing as girls and went to a private chat room to cyber).
Back in the day I'd play Warcraft 2 online and over dial-up it was frustratingly unplayable sometimes: God knows how Doom (let alone Descent) must have been! Broadband internet really changed everything.
