The audio production analogy would be low signal to noise ratio or faulty noise gate

It's not that I can't differentiate loud and soft and hence I can appreciate dynamics. Rather inability to distinguish background noise from signal or "meaningful information". I hear the background noise let say the air conditioner, the hum of the computer when other people are talking. Most people have an equivalent of a "noise gate" that can filter out the noise. I simply can't. Makes it very difficulty for speech discrimination in loud environment but I'm perfectly ok in quite environment.
In film I have trouble hearing the dialogue of movie over the ambient noise in the film hence I always watch tv shows and movies with subtitles.
So people comment that I listen to music or watch TV very loud. Not necessarily cause my ears are faulty but rather because I have to increase the volume so I can hear the music or tv over the hum/air conditioner etc
