Since he's the only artist I can think of who actively included odd-metered mallet-laden instrumentation in his music on a regular basis (on Ruth! on Ruth!). Only other one that comes to mind in the same vein is Cardiacs though they didn't do it as frequently and dropped it after lineup changes.
They're not wrong in that it's extremely under-explored. But "ripe" hmmm probably not. Less traditional instrumentation of all kinds would certainly be something I'd like to hear more of in prog though. Most bands of that type don't venture much farther than the occasional flute (though there are plenty of notable exceptions). Though perhaps it's unnecessary considering most prog bands have keyboard players and you can easily diversify the sounds with that.
