I have yet to find a rap album that I like (besides As Nasty As They Want To Be for its novelty value) but I haven't tried much. Heard a lot of the big ones; they just don't catch me (Kendrick Lamar has a really annoying voice, BTW. Reminds me of the guy from Fine Young Cannibals). Enter the Wu-Tang is pretty good, I guess.
I will say that to call it a variant of spoken-word (à la Trung) is to miss the point. It's a form of poetry. (Calling rap atonal is silly, like assailing Walt Whitman for not sticking to the meter. It's meaningless.)
