Prog opening! Like outright pompous prog opening.
Cheesy synths!!!! Deyong might not be in the band but his spirit lives on.
Vocoder parts ďgoing out to the universe for the future of mother earthĒ
Actually a pretty cool intro. Itís hokey but fun. I like the drumming a lot.
Gone Gone Gone
Hey this sounds like Queen. Gowanís vocals kinda sound like a cross between Freddie Murcury and Roger Taylor. Itís kinda cock rocky and dumb but i dig the energy. Whoever is playing lead guitar (shaw or young) is shredding up a storm. Only 2 minutes long. Fun song.
Hundred Million Miles from Home
This one is pretty dumb. The melody is nothing to write home about and the lyrics are really clunky space-themed stuff ďI got my hands on the wheel of my rocket mobileĒ ďYour gravitational pull
Is gonna tear me apartĒ Duh doy
Trouble at the Big Show
Meh. forgettable. Itís only 2:30 though so it goes by quick
acoustic sci-fi mysticalness. Kicks in to a nice little syncopated groove.
The drumming feels more distinctive on this album than i'm used to from styx for some reason.
Dig the moog part on this.
No ballads so far. The lyrics are clunky but this album is actually turning out to be pretty decent.
OK this one is kinda bad. lame obvious sing-along type of chorus. Tries to be anthemic but isnít a good enough melody to justify it. Itís not like embarassingly bad tho. Just kinda meh. ďHypergolic fumes Hyperbolic tunesĒ is a brilliantly dumb nerdy turn of phrase.
The Greater Good
Sounds like we got ourselves a power ballad. Itís a piano-based though. No awful Deyoung rhodes. Kinda forgettable. But competent.
The lyrics are a conversation between characters named First Officer and Locomotive. Thatís kinda interesting.
Time May Bend
Kinda sounds like one of those Spockís beard songs where they arenít trying to be prog. We didnít need another song about ďShining your light on meĒ
Ten Thousand Ways
Itís an interlude.
Nice 12 string picking. Longest song on the album at 6 minutes. The chorus has that weird mildly-anthemic vibe again, but itís got some prog-instrumental sections that are pretty solid. itís not that amazing (no weird time signatures or whatever) but itís pretty competent and justify the songís length. there's a drum solo bit which i liked.
All Systems Stable
This is 17 seconds long, why is this a standalone rack?
Piano prog instrumental. Gowan is doing a faux-classical piano part thatís pretty alright. I guess this is supposed to represent the decent of the spaceship to the planetís surface. At that itís not all that effective. But itís not something iíd have expected from styx.
Another meh, song that tries be anthemic and powerful and only sorta suceeds. Its OK. not memorable at all. But has some interesting bits.
Mission to Mars
More dumb lyrics. These lyrics arenít as aggressively dumb as I was hoping for though. ďSparks and quarks, they glow in the dark/They'll someday remark as a walk in the park/This Mission to MarsĒ LOL ok thatís more what i was hoping for. Catchy chorus. doesn't feel much like a closer. i was expecting something to mirror the intro. but it's kind of just a typical song on the album
Hey this album was alright! It had cheesy synths but they were mostly moogs which i can live with. Mostly piano and organ based. The drummer is pretty good. There were some cool guitar solos. A bit of a modern prog vibe to it, which i guess could be expected. Not great but good enough that Iíll probably give it another couple listens.
Was this liveblog worth it? Eh probably not.
