It's one of the odder things to happen in music retail that when it looked like the industry was about to collapse -- closing record stores, illegal downloading being the norm -- customers in the mid-2000s en masse switched to paid downloading. I can't think of any other industry where the business went from free to paid, especially since you got nothing more with legal downloading than you got with illegal. Now things like Soulseek and what.cd appeal mostly to music nerds.
Record stores are surely in much better shape than they were in 2007, no? Maybe I'm in my metropolitan bubble.
The musicians I know really hate Spotify.
