"Record stores are surely in much better shape than they were in 2007, no? Maybe I'm in my metropolitan bubble."
I'm in a metropolitan bubble, too. I can think of at least about 15 record stores that have closed in last 10 years in Manhattan and only one that has opened (not counting Urban Outfitters' decision to have a small vinyl section a few years ago).
There have been more openings in certain Brooklyn neighborhoods, but other than the Rough Trade they are small, mostly second-hand-only stores that sprouted up as a result of changing local demographics.
