"American food" beyond stuff like burgers is regional. There are a few regional "types" like creole, soul food, & Tex-Mex that you can base a whole restaurant around. Beyond a few obvious examples like those regionally popular dishes will probably just turn up on a menu alongside the more ubiquitous burgers and meat & potato dishes. And alot of it is the American variant of some ethnic food, like Chicago deep dish pizza. That stuff is really as American anything else unless you think that the only "American culture" belongs to American Indians.
