They had two albums I'd rate below a "B"

Accelerate and Around The Sun. Big snoozes, both. Every other R. E. M. album I'll go to bat for--yes, including Monster which was repulsive ideologically ("We're all 38 years old!!! It's time to release a big glammy Lollapalooza album and make ourselves look like elder statesmen, mostly revolving around our frontman acting pompous and our guitarist beating the crap out of a delay pedal!") but still managed a decent handful of tunes.
I love everything in that Top 20....except "Nightswimming"!! Gaahhh!!! Their worst hit, easily! "Fall On Me" sure had a dumb looking single cover.
They are my favorite band though, so rah rah.
I think U2 were consistent for 17 years (1980-97)--I'd make it 20, but like probably everyone here, I too finally bit the bullet and admitted that the comeback songs they had in 2000 are now very annoying and overplayed.
