The "Thriller" and "Bad" videos are the main iconic moments I remember from childhood (and to a lesser extent, the "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" videos, and "Black Or White" was actually a huge event in its own way). I have no idea how most younger folks view MJ but the folks I work with (who are mostly in their early-mid 20's) seem to love his music.
I maintain that "Bad" is his best and most consistent album, even if nothing on it can touch "Billie Jean". And you're right, his ballads were generally the black marks on his albums, though there are some exceptions like "Liberian Girl".
"Dangerous" is probably remembered for its hits but forgotten as an album (only have the hits myself, never heard the album).
