For example, if a song is bad principally because of poor lyrics, or musical arrangements + lyrics that combine to heavyhanded/cheesy/maudlin/melodramatic effect, than a jazz rendition can be just what rescues it.
In a way that's cheating, I guess, because you're simply eliminating one of the key elements of the song.
A pop/rock cover of a bad pop/rock song? I'd have to think more about that.
