I think he was/is a decent singer

.. it's just he was in a group with at least two guys (Brian/Carl, in case it needed saying which it didn't) with absolutely transcendently supernaturally good voices. But the argument could also be made that Mike's voice was a lot more commercially appealing and helped sell the band on those early hits in a way the Wilson bros voice alone never could have. Other disconnected observations that I'll add on their own cos I'm too tired and dumb to work them into a larger paragraph -
* in the late 60s/early 70s, Mike was singing using a deeper more natural register that proves he was more than a one trick pony with regards to vocal approach. Check out 'Meant For You' for just one example of a tender mature reading of a subtler B.Wilson melody.
* I saw Brian Wilson live last week; Al Jardine was in the band and sang a few of Mike's leads, and I was struck by how similar their voices were. Their voices on mid period BBs albums are often as hard to tell apart as Brian's and Carl's can be.
