I think their main problem is that neither their 80's or 90's sound have a whole lot to do with anything happening in modern music, so as you say there isn't a whole lot driving anyone to discover their music, outside of the occasional Pitchfork retrospective.
The nostalgia wave usually kicks in after around 20 years, but we're already past that now and nothing much seems to have happened!
I don't think they're going to be forgotten, they have too many culturally ingrained songs that show up in tv and films all the time, but I don't get the impression they're building new generations of fans.
