When I was in high school REM already had a reputation of dad rock music

Imitation of life was the last relevant song by REM in terms of songs that people could recognise. It was considered somewhat lame dad rock friendly group. Mostly famous for the radio friendly soft rock Everybody hurts and losing my religion. The IRS years aren't particularly well known with the exception of it's the end of the world as we know it.
REM wasn't considered a particularly cool group to be a fan of.
Same with U2 although I suspect through a greater degree. Being a U2 fan nowadays is synonymous of having bad taste in music and I have had people mocking me for admittingly I am a fan of them. As long as Bono is still alive I don't think U2 will be a respected band to like until long after he is dead where all the baggage goes away and there is just music to judge and not the personality colouring people perception
